About Panchadasi Chapter 10

Panchadasi (पञ्चदशी) is an extensive and comprehensive text written by Swami Vidyaranya on the topic of Advaita Vedanta. Divided into 15 chapters, it explores the truths and wisdom laid out in texts such as the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras, and the Bhagavad Gita.

Chapter 10 discusses the Natakadeepa, or the Lamp of the Theatre. In this chapter, the supreme Self is likened to a lamp illuminating a theatre stage. Just as the lamp casts light on the empty stage before the play begins, during its performance, and even after its conclusion when the stage is vacant, the self-luminous supreme Self exists before the universe’s inception, throughout its manifestation, and beyond its dissolution.
